To Maria Felipe
With boldness and courage, Maria Felipa was the one who defied the limits imposed on her and led a group of women against the forces of oppression. Maria Felipa, a black woman from Itaparica Island, Bahia, became a symbol of female and Afro-Brazilian resistance in the struggle for Bahia's independence between 1822 and 1823.
Her story, although neglected in many official records for a long historical period, is a testament to the strength and resilience of women, especially black women, who face adversity in societies that often marginalize them. Inspired by her courage and determination, we named our Popular Advisory as Maria Felipa. Her struggle reflects the challenges faced by many women, black and peripheral women and LGBTQIA people in their daily lives.
Just as Maria Felipa resisted with fearlessness and strategy, we resist and challenge systems of oppression, using Popular Advocacy as our main tool. Today, we carry forward Maria Felipa's legacy, ensuring that her story is not forgotten and that, in this way, like her, we can be agents of change and resistance in a society that calls for Justice, Equality and Rights for all.
